A significant number of Colorado Sheriffs are opposing the state’s new gun control laws.
DENVER—Colorado sheriffs upset with new state gun restrictions adopted in the aftermath of last year’s mass shootings are trying to invalidate the regulations with a federal lawsuit filed Friday that argues the measures violate the Second Amendment.
At issue are two laws passed this spring that are set to take effect July 1, limiting the size of the of ammunition magazines to 15 rounds and expanding background checks to private and online firearm sales.
The lawsuit involves sheriffs from 54 of the state’s 64 counties, and most represent rural, gun-friendly areas of the state where they were elected. They said it was their duty to uphold the U.S. Constitution.
“We each took an oath. The line in the sand has been drawn, and we will stand united,” said El Paso County Sheriff Terry Maketa. . . .
While the sheriffs are mostly opposing the new gun control measures, the Chiefs of Police association are supporting it. Go Sheriffs! Thank you for standing up for the gun rights of law-abiding citizens.
Fox plays a portion of the violent home invasion where the mother is savagely attacked by the home invader while her daughter sits on the couch watching. It is pretty rough. Thankfully the perp has been arrested.
You can watch the video of the home invasion here. Plus, the FoxNews anchors then discuss how they feel about guns, gun control, and self-defense in those situations.
Wikipedia offers a good starting place for some basic research on the history of gun rights, gun control, and other gun-related topics. You can read their article “Right to Keep and Bear Arms”here. It surveys many countries and their politics and basic positions on the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. An extensive section is accorded to the United States, where you can find the following quote:
Interest groups, primarily in the United States, exert political pressure for and against legislation limiting the right to keep and bear arms. This political debate in America is organized between those who seek stricter regulations and those who believe gun regulations violate the Second Amendment protection of a right to keep and bear arms. The largest advocacy group in this regard is the National Rifle Association, and its political wing, the NRA Institute for Legislative Action. The NRA has been described as one of the largest and most powerful political special interest groups in the United States. Several other groups including the Gun Owners of America and the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, while smaller in size, are also politically active. The main gun control advocacy group is the Brady Campaign which has been described as considerably less effective than gun-rights organizations.
There are footnotes and citations at the bottom of the article. Please consult those for further research on gun rights.
Priorities for Research to Reduce the Threat of Firearm-Related Violence,
was released on June 5th. You can find that study here. At this time, the study is available for download as a pdf, but you need to register, which in this case means just your name and email. Very simple process.
Slate’s article, Rethinking Gun Control, cites the report and mentions, among other things, that according to the study, ‘Guns are used for self-defense often and effectively’. Should that really be a surprise? No, of course not.
And, when governments promote and legislate for more gun control, are they in fact reducing the ability of law-abiding citizens to use their guns “for self-defense often and effectively”? You can answer that question without any help from me.
Not sure about all the ammunition terminology? The Well Armed Woman site has done a great service by providing a brief guide to ammunition.
Ammunition – a word filled with mystery. When I began my journey into firearms, this subject and the overwhelming confusion that it created was almost enough to stop me in my tracks! I am one of those people that just dives in and consumes information relentlessly until I capture from it what I need, and I was beyond confused. What I have come to understand is that it IS confusing! As a woman, I am not incapable, in any sense of the word, of figuring it out, (which was what I started thinking when I began researching ammunition!) what I am however is practical. I want to know what I need to know and what it means for me, for my firearms and for my safety. I will try here to demystify and bring into clarity, the basics of what you need to know in regard to defensive ammunitions, .380, 9mm, .38 Special, .357 Magnum, .40, .45 calibers. There are many other calibers than what will be discussed here so I have provided links on the bottom of the page for those who would like to go deeper into this subject. . . .
You will find some helpful definitions and basic terms explained, some nice clean graphics and pics of the various ammo compared, etc.
Why get a concealed carry permit? The following short video (the first minute is the recorded audio of an actual 911 call in progress and being made by a woman who is unarmed and eventually found by police murdered in her bedroom) is very graphic and disturbing, so I wouldn’t recommend this for young children.
Please consider this retired police officer’s message. GET A CONCEALED CARRY PERMIT.
