Why Congress Should Oppose Universal Background Checks – Gun Owners of America

Why Congress Should Oppose Universal Background Checks – Gun Owners of America

The articles provides thirteen reasons why Congress should oppose them. Here are the first couple to get you started. They are all good reasons. Just that first question is enough to cause concern? Can we trust the administration that gave us Fast & Furious? That was a gun tracking scheme that they lost control of, and we are still waiting for answers.

Thirteen Reasons Why Congress Should Oppose Universal Background Checks

— Biggest concern relates to gun registration and confiscation

Can we really trust the administration that gave us Fast & Furious to respect our Second Amendment rights?

Recent articles in the liberal media have suggested that setting up a framework for gun registration and confiscation -– the so-called “universal background check” –- is somehow less insidious than other gun control proposals currently on the table.

Anyone who believes this is delusional. Here are thirteen reasons why the “universal background check” is the most insidious gun control of all:

FIRST: The principle that no American can own a firearm without getting the go-ahead from the government is offensive to Americans. We don’t require breathalyzer checks before people get into their cars even though drunk drivers kill more than 30 times more people than “assault rifles” do. Nor do we require background checks on clubs and hammers, which also kill more often than “assault rifles.”[i]

SECOND: Universal background checks would not have stopped Adam Lanza (who stole his guns), or James Holmes or Jared Loughner (who passed background checks). . . .

Many great reasons. Please read them and share them with others.

Senator Moran’s Letter to President Obama Urging Repudiation of the United Nations’ Arms Trade Treaty

Senator Moran’s Letter to President Obama Urging Repudiation of the United Nations’ Arms Trade Treaty

Senator Moran’s letter is a compilation of very solid reasons for why the United States should not be participant in the United Nations’ Arms Trade Treaty. I have included two of his six reasons below. Senator Moran states clearly at the end of his letter that the Senate will not ratify the treaty. I hope so. Why would We The People, through our elected representatives, ever want to transfer our autonomy and gun rights heritage to an international bureaucracy? Please read Senator Moran’s letter.

Written by Senator Jerry Moran
October 10, 2013

President Barack Obama
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear President Obama:

We write to express our concern and regret at your decision to sign the United Nations’ Arms Trade Treaty. For the following reasons, we cannot give our advice and consent to this treaty:

First, the treaty was adopted by a procedure which violates a red line laid down by your own administration. In October 2009, then-Secretary of State Hillary Clinton stated that the U.S. supported the negotiation of the treaty only by “the rule of consensus decision-making.” But in April 2013, after the treaty failed to achieve consensus, it was adopted by majority vote in the U.N. General Assembly. We fear that this capitulation has done grave damage to the diplomatic credibility of the United States.

Second, the treaty allows amendments by a three-quarters majority vote. As the treaty is amended, it will become a source of political and legal pressure on the U.S. to comply in practice with amendments it was unwilling to accept. This would circumvent the power and duty of the Senate to provide its advice and consent on treaty commitments before they are assumed by the United States.

Third, the treaty includes . . .

I hope this letter gets some attention.

GunOwners of America – Senator Moran Seeks to Repudiate UN Small Arms Treaty

GunOwners of America – Senator Moran Seeks to Repudiate UN Small Arms Treaty

Although John Kerry signed the UN Small Arms Treaty, other senators who better understand our history, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights and the Second Amendment, are seeking to repudiate the treaty. Senator Moran is now circulating a letter for that purpose. Senator Moran cites the extensive work that Gun Owners of America has done to reveal what the UN Small Arms Treaty is about. It is wrong, and it does undermine our sovereignty.

“[GOA’s Larry] Pratt also contends that the U.N. has a terrible track record in protecting human life. He said the horrors in Rwanda are a perfect example of why the U.N. has no business deciding who should and should not have access to guns.” — WorldNetDaily, June 2013

When you’re dealing with an adversary who hates the 2nd Amendment as much as Barack Obama, you have to fight attacks coming from several different directions.

We know we’ve thrown a lot at you lately. But there’s one other issue we’d like to bring to your attention.

As you know, the Obama administration recently signed the virulently anti-gun UN Arms Trade Treaty (ATT).

Although purporting to regulate international trade in arms, the treaty empowers anti-gun administrations (such as Barack Obama’s) to institute internal gun control, including gun bans, gun registration, and more. In fact, the drafters of the treaty made no secret of their goal of imposing measures such as microstamping on countries like the United States.

GOA’s legislative counsel has done a word-by-word analysis of the treaty, which can be seen here. If left unchecked, the treaty language will give rise a wide ranging series of gun control restrictions, as mentioned above. . . .

Wikipedia – Right to Keep and Bear Arms article is a good starting place for gun rights research

Wikipedia offers a good starting place for some basic research on the history of gun rights, gun control, and other gun-related topics. You can read their article “Right to Keep and Bear Arms”here. It surveys many countries and their politics and basic positions on the Right to Keep and Bear Arms. An extensive section is accorded to the United States, where you can find the following quote:

Interest groups, primarily in the United States, exert political pressure for and against legislation limiting the right to keep and bear arms. This political debate in America is organized between those who seek stricter regulations and those who believe gun regulations violate the Second Amendment protection of a right to keep and bear arms. The largest advocacy group in this regard is the National Rifle Association, and its political wing, the NRA Institute for Legislative Action. The NRA has been described as one of the largest and most powerful political special interest groups in the United States. Several other groups including the Gun Owners of America and the Citizens Committee for the Right to Keep and Bear Arms, while smaller in size, are also politically active.[112] The main gun control advocacy group is the Brady Campaign which has been described as considerably less effective than gun-rights organizations.

Ron Paul’s Gun Rights Record – STELLAR- The ONLY Republican Presidential Candidate With Such a Record

Ron Paul’s Gun Rights Record – STELLAR – The ONLY Republican Presidential Candidate With Such a Record

The following blog mentioned that Rick Perry is courting gun owners in Iowa. That may be true, but Perry failed to return a basic gun survey earlier this year, as mentioned on this blog Rick Perry Failed To Return a National Gun Rights Survey back in September.

I’m glad Perry is courting gun owners, but I hope he is as sincere as Ron Paul when it comes to gun rights, and that Perry is not just seeking votes (why would anyone ever think such a thought about our political candidates? Newt Gingrich’s gun control voting when in Congress, perhaps???).

Ron Paul’s stellar pro-gun rights message and legislation goes way back, all the way to 1968. Not only does Ron Paul promote gun rights, he seeks to repeal gun control legislation.

You can read what Gun Owners of America said about Ron Paul’s gun rights record in September 2011 this year:

Rep. Ron Paul – A+ Voting Record
Friday, 30 September 2011 16:23
Rep. Ron Paul of Texas has a perfect voting record on Second Amendment issues. He has sponsored legislation to repeal most gun laws dating back to 1968 — as well as, introduced legislation to get the U.S. out of the anti-gun United Nations.

Ron Paul has an A+ rating with Gun Owners of America.

Ron Paul’s Gun Record is A+, according to Gun Owners of America.

Operation Fast and Furious – Crime Control? or More Gun Control?

Operation Fast and Furious – Crime Control? or More Gun Control?

Rep. Daryl Issa made this point in the most recent oversight hearing of the Department of Justice. Attorney General Eric Holder appeared before the House Judiciary Committee, and not a surprise, the hearing focused mainly on the Fast and Furious gunwalking scheme. Several other committee members offered support to the contention that Fast and Furious is an attempt to create more gun control laws. Gun Owners of America provide some excellent analysis of the hearing and what is going on. Still, no one is being held accountable for the disaster created by Operation Fast and Furious.

. . . Holder, as he has already done numerous times in testimony before Congress, continued his practice of stonewalling and deflecting blame for the failed scheme that led to thousands of firearms “walking” across the border into Mexico and into the hands of violent drug cartels.

Committee members grilled Holder on misleading Congress, not dealing appropriately with the individuals who called the shots on Fast and Furious and, even worse, for using the guns that the government allowed to “walk” to Mexico as an excuse for greater gun control in the U.S.

Fast and Furious Leading to More Gun Control

From his opening statement, Rep. Daryl Issa (R-CA), a chief congressional investigator looking into Fast and Furious, made clear that gun control, not crime control, is really the main objective of the Obama administration. . . .

In other words, the Justice Department helped to create a huge mess, and is now seeking more authority to regulate firearms to clean it up. At the same time, the Department has taken no action to hold anyone accountable within the government. . .

Newt Gingrich – Criticized by Georgia Guns Rights Groups as “No Friend of Gunowners”

Newt Gingrich – Criticized by Georgia Guns Rights Groups as “No Friend of Gunowners”

Newt Gingrich, as of this date [12/06/11], continues in his hopes and pursuit of the GOP’s presidential nomination. However, Newt’s past record on gun rights has some voters concerned and may become an obstacle for getting the GOP nomination.

Georgia Gun Rights groups remember Newt’s record as Speaker of the House when he demonstrated clear support for gun control. Will he be any different in the future? Georgia Gun Rights groups say no.

By Mike Hothi

Grassroots guns rights groups in Georgia blasted GOP presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich today for supporting gun control laws during his time as Speaker of the House.

In a statement Monday, the group stated “Georgia Gun Owners know Newt’s history of gun control. He represented parts of our state for 20 years. He’s been playing both sides of the gun issue as long as we can remember.”

Prior to becoming Speaker, Gingrich had an “A” rating with Gun Owners of America (GOA). However, once he came to power the GOA dropped his rating to a “D.”

The activists said today that Gingrich spoke against more gun regulations despite supporting gun control legislation in the House.

Gingrich had stated, “as long as I am Speaker of this House, no gun control legislation is going to move in committee or on the floor of this House and there will be no further erosion of their rights.” However, Gingrich supported a gun control bill that stripped Second Amendment rights from citizens charged with misdemeanor domestic violence.

“Newt Gingrich is no friend of gun owners,” said the group. “I wish Georgia Gun Owners had a mountaintop to scream this information from.” . . . .

UN Arms Trade Treaty – Representative Joe Walsh Proposes a Bill to Prevent Future Gun Control of U.S. Citizens

UN Arms Trade Treaty – Representative Joe Walsh Proposes a Bill to Prevent Future Gun Control of U.S. Citizens

The legislation proposed by Representative Joe Walsh anticipates the future UN Arms Trade Treaty due out sometime in 2012. No one is certain what it will contain in its final form, but many gun rights groups have warned that it will seek to undermine our Second Amendment gun rights in the USA.

Representative Joe Walsh (R-IL) has drafted a bill that would block U.S. funding to the United Nations if it seeks to implement gun control measures affecting U.S. citizens.

Despite victories by gun owners in elections and legislative battles throughout the country in recent years, on the international front gun control is moving quickly.

Most significantly, in 2012 the UN plans to release a final draft of the Arms Trade Treaty—a treaty that will have severe consequences for American gun owners.

Meetings are held behind close doors, but from information gathered by GOA we believe that the ATT will, at the very least, require gun owner registration and microstamping of ammunition. . . .

Attorney General Eric Holder – Calls Continue for His Resignation Over Fast and Furious

Attorney General Eric Holder – Calls Continue for His Resignation Over Fast and Furious

I don’t know how long Eric Holder can continue as Attorney General. The following is from a Gun Owners of America update, demonstrating not only that the calls have increased, but now the names include Rick Perry and Michelle Bachmann.

Calls increase for Holder’s ouster

The opposition continues to reverberate inside the Beltway, as more than 50 congressmen — and one Presidential candidate [there are two now that Michelle Bachmann has spoken out] — are now demanding that Attorney General Eric Holder resign.

Gov. Rick Perry became the first presidential candidate to call for Holder’s ouster. Pointing to the Fast & Furious debacle, Gov. Rick Perry said this week that, “It is high time for Mr. Holder to step down. If he refuses to resign, Mr. Obama must fire him immediately.”

Operation Fast & Furious is the gun-running scheme where the Justice Department approved (and in some cases, helped fund) the purchase and smuggling of firearms into Mexico — all with the apparent intent of using the increased violence south of the border as a pretext for more gun control in this country.

In October, Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL) became the first congressmen to publicly call for Holder’s resignation. Two weeks after Walsh “broke the ice,” Arizona Representative Paul Gosar organized a press conference where more than three dozen congressmen announced they were joining the call for Holder’s ouster.

“From what we’ve seen – lying to Congress in his dictations and prior comments – the audacity of this egregious injustice on American citizens as well as Mexican citizens, he’s got to go,” Gosar said.

In addition to Operation Fast & Furious, the Justice Department continues to engage in activities that target or demonize gun owners. U.S. News & World Report informed their readers last week that the Obama Administration has just put millions of acres of public lands off limits to hunting and target practice.

It’s actions like these which demonstrate the clear animus that President Obama has for gun owners. Stay tuned for more updates as these stories continue to develop. Click here to help GOA spread the word to more and more gun owners.

Rep. Walsh Calls for Attorney General Holder to Resign – Gun Owners of America Alert

Rep. Walsh Calls for Attorney General Holder to Resign – Gun Owners of America Alert

Some strong words for Attorney General Eric Holder from Representative Joe Walsh, calling on Holder to accept responsibility and admit the wrongdoing of the DOJ and its failed “Fast and Furious” program. Gun Owners of America is asking its members to contact their Congress representatives and to support Walsh in the effort to pressure Eric Holder to resign.

Rep. Walsh’s words to Eric Holder are below.

Rep. Walsh Calls for Attorney General Holder to Resign
— Where does your Congressman stand?

October 27, 2011

Rep. Joe Walsh (R-IL) sent a scathing rebuke to Attorney General Eric Holder yesterday and called on him to resign his post at the Justice Department.

Noting that Holder needed to “take responsibility” for implicating the United States as an accessory to violent crimes committed by the Mexican drug cartels, Walsh blasted the Attorney General for the role he played in the “subsequent cover-up” of the failed Fast and Furious operation.

As detailed by Gun Owners of America on many occasions, Operation Fast and Furious is the gun-running scheme where the Justice Department has approved — and in some cases, helped fund — the purchase and smuggling of firearms into Mexico.

The apparent purpose of this gun running scandal was to use the increased violence south of the border as a pretext for more gun control in this country. Sadly, two U.S. federal agents — and hundreds of Mexican citizens — have died as a result of these illegal sales which the FBI approved under the direction of the Obama Administration.

Rep. Walsh takes Holder to task for “knowingly [forcing] licensed firearms dealers to sell guns to violent criminals” and for claiming that he was “not aware” this happening. As Walsh notes, Holder “received no less than seven memos” detailing the creation and progress of Fast and Furious.

“The American people deserve to know the truth regarding Attorney General Eric Holder’s knowledge and role in the Fast and Furious operation,” Walsh said in a statement. “This program was deliberately designed to attack law-abiding American gun-owners and gun-dealers. Why else would an anti-gun Administration force licensed firearms dealers to sell guns to violent criminals?”

Rep. Walsh told Fox News’ Neil Cavuto that Holder “needs to be held accountable.”
